Digital Portfolios (MAP)
In the Sea to Sky School District, a student’s digital portfolio is known as their MAP (My Action Plan). The MAP is a living document that digitally captures a student’s learning journey, helping them to navigate their way through school, while at the same time serving as a self-authored guide to those that teach and support them.
When describing portfolios, we tend to think of a product that a student has created that shows artefacts of learning with some words to accompany what the visuals mean.
In the Sea to Sky School District, the portfolio process engages students in learning about competencies, how they might apply the language to their own learning circumstances through a process of self-reflection, and archiving evidence of learning in a digital format.
Through student curation of a variety of artefacts, such as text, images, audio recordings, and video, chosen from learning experiences both inside and outside of school, student learning and growth is documented over time.
The Road to Building a Digital Portfolio K-3
In primary grades (K-3), it's important students learn to identify and show their learning. Equally as important, teachers coach students on using competency-based language while gaining insight into their learning through the collection of evidence and sharing self-reflections. Students often learn to capture images that show their experiences, while providing reflections using digital media, such as Seesaw.
The Road to Building a Digital Portfolio 4-9
In intermediate (4-9), students learn to archive and reflect on their learning as their technical skills become increasingly advanced. This, partnered with continued understanding and use of competency-based language, leads to a diversification of learning collections from different subject areas. Similarly, students' understanding of the 4 Blankets of Resilience help shapes who they are as learners. Digital platforms extend to other applications including Google Sites, My Blueprint, and Spaces.
The Road to Building a Digital Portfolio 10-12
In the Graduation Program (10-12), students enroll in Digital Communications 11 as a means to support their final stages of developing a digital portfolio. Throughout these years, students continue to develop a deep understanding of the competencies needed beyond school. They are coached and encouraged to use competency-based language in all courses, while culminating their learning and reflections in a digital product that can be used for career and post-secondary applications, scholarship submissions, and their Capstone project.
