News release: SD48 Board of Education will not mandate COVID-19 for staff

After careful consideration, the Board of Education of School District No.48 will not mandate COVID-19 vaccines for staff.

“The Board, along with staff, has gathered information with respect to our vaccination rates, rates of transmission, advice from VCH, collaboration with BCSTA and have decided that we will NOT be implementing a mandatory vaccination for staff”, says Rebecca Barley, School District No.48 Board of Education’s Chair.

The Sea to Sky area has high community vaccination rates. Provincially 91% of those eligible have had one dose of the vaccine and 97% in the Howe Sound region. Provincially 87% of those eligible have had two doses of the vaccine.

In making this decision, the Board carefully considered all implications of a vaccine mandate for staff, including information and guidance of public health officials. In doing so, the Board reviewed the K-12 Sector Guidelines for Vaccination Policies developed by the Ministry of Education, BC Public School Employers’ Association and the provincial advisory group.
