BC Ministry of Education and Child Care

In April of 2022, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Child Care merged.

This change was brought about to:

  • Create a better understanding of regional child care needs
  • Increase provision of child care in BC (including on school grounds)
  • Strengthen early years transitions

B.C.'s universal child care strategy is focused on the following principles:

  • Quality and Culturally Based Care
  • Access and Inclusive Care
  • Affordability

"The Province's plan for early care and learning is to move from the current patchwork system
of programs and services... towards universal child care that is affordable and available
for any family that wants or needs it."

- B.C. Ministry of Education and Child Care

Child Care on School Grounds

In collaboration with community partners, we create opportunities for child care on school grounds to provide seamless support for families and continuity in learning and care. Our Shared Vision for Early Years Programs on School Grounds aligns us in our work and supports us in making decisions that are in the best interest of children and families. For more information on child care programs offered by Sea to Sky Community Services visit www.sscs.caTo learn more about community-based child care in the Sea to Sky region visit Child Care Resource and Referral.

Sea to Sky School District operates a Seamless Day Before and After School Care Program at Brackendale Elementary School. This Ministry of Education and Child Care program started as a pilot in our district in 2021. Currently having 24 licensed spaces, this program provides child care for 30 families in our community.

Seamless Day is intended for kindergarten and grade one students and is designed to strengthen early years transitions. Early childhood educators and responsible adults help soften transitions to and from school and deliver responsive, quality care. These educators work alongside school-based staff during school hours to support primary classes, small groups, and individual children. This collaborative work with teachers is aligned with the B.C. Early Learning Framework to build capacity in play-based learning, social-emotional development, and overall health and wellbeing.
